Professor Adrian Săftoiu, MD, PhD, MSc, FASGE has a long standing expertise as a senior gastroenterologist, being the Scientific Director of the Research Center of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Craiova, Romania. Prof. Săftoiu graduated in 1995 in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Craiova, followed by specializations in internal medicine (2000) and gastroenterology (2002). Prof. Săftoiu has received intensive training in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, with emphasis on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), in several centers, including University Hospital Aarhus and Gentofte University Hospital, Denmark. From September 2012, Prof. Săftoiu holds a position of Visiting Clinical Professor at the Department of Endoscopy, Copenhagen University Herlev Hospital, Denmark.

Scientific activity of Prof. Săftoiu included publication of 125 PubMed/Medline papers, several of them in high impact journals, including 102 ISI articles, cited 833 times in other ISI journals (ISI Web of Science accessed 31st March 2014), leading to a Hirsch index (h-index) of 15. Also, Dr. Săftoiu published 14 books and book chapters, including 5 international book chapters. Prof. Săftoiu is member of several scientific societies in Romania and abroad, including the Publication Committee of the European Federation of Societies of Ultrasonography in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB), Research Committee of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE), American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). Experience as an evaluator is based on the “peer-review” activity in the following journals: Gastroenterology, Pancreatology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Endoscopy, Journal of Pancreas, World Journal of Gastroenterology, European Journal of Ultrasound (Ultraschall in der Medizin), Journal of Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases, Journal of Clinical Ultrasound, etc. Evaluation activity included national research competitions, as well as evaluation for E.C. FP7 projects, Hong-Kong Research Grants Council, Swiss National Science Foundation and Catalan Agency for Health Technology Assessment. Dr. Săftoiu is member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases and Visible Human Journal of Endoscopy, as well as in other indexed journals, including Medical Ultrasonography or Current Health Sciences Journal.

Current research interests include hybrid fusion imaging techniques (including co-registered EUS-CT/MR, EUS- guided CLE, etc.), diagnostic and therapeutic EUS (including elastography and contrast-enhanced examinations), natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES and EUS-guided NOTES procedures), etc.
