Overview of the course
Intestinal ultrasound (IUS) has become an essential diagnostic tool in modern clinical practice, providing a safe, non-invasive, and cost-effective approach to the evaluation of an expanding spectrum of gastrointestinal diseases, including acute appendicitis, acute diverticulitis, intestinal obstruction, intestinal ischemia, neoplasms, and other less common conditions. Its most important clinical application, however, is in the assessment and management of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).
This educational seminar aims to introduce the fundamental principles of intestinal ultrasound and to familiarize participants with its most clinically relevant findings in inflammatory bowel diseases, particularly Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, as well as in a range of non-IBD intestinal pathologies.
Learning Objectives
• Understanding the fundamental principles of ultrasound physics
• Optimizing image quality and adjusting ultrasound equipment appropriately
• Understanding the ultrasound anatomy of the intestinal tract
• Identifying the normal sonographic appearance of intestinal structures, including cross-sectional area and echogenicity
• Identifying anatomical landmarks and positions used for spatial orientation
• Becoming familiar with the essential skills required to perform intestinal ultrasound effectively
• Becoming familiar with the most common pathological findings in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD)
